Communicate
Affective States
I will create technologies that improve the communication of affect across the boundaries of disorder, class, and culture
How do we effectively communicate emotion?
As a biracial student from a low-income family, my upbringing was characterized by multiple relocations between Japan and the US. This experience exposed me to the vast differences in how emotion is communicated across class and culture. For example, what might be perceived as a somber expression of sadness in the subtly expressed emotions of Japan, might be unnoticed in the more expressive culture of the US. In the same way, I anticipate cultural differences in how affective technologies will be perceived and adopted across the world. To effectively translate the discoveries in affective neuroscience to society we will need to facilitate the education and application of these technologies. I plan to develop experiments and interfaces that assist in this process conveying and regulating emotions.
